Like many branches of Chinese medicine, traditional gynecology (women’s health) has a long history of using acupuncture and Chinese herbs to alleviate many gynecological symptoms and diseases. In our clinic, women’s health is one of our major specialty.
The earliest records of medical writings on gynecology date right back to 1500-1000 BC. One of the most famous and very highly regarded texts on TCM (Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen: The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine—Simple Questions) references women’s physiology and anatomy specifically and specifies the diagnosis of many menstrual and gynecological conditions.
Nowadays treatment of gynecological diseases with Chinese medicine is so successful and popular in China that there are specialised hospitals throughout the country that dedicate the entire work of the hospital to gynecological diagnosis and treatment, often integrating both Western medicine and Chinese medicine.
It is often said that the treatment of women is much more complicated than men because of the richness and complexity of the woman’s menstrual cycle. This incredible complexity forms the basis of diagnosis and treatment of gynecological issues and disease that is like no other system. If we can get the interaction of the qi, blood, yin and yang, tissues, organs and systems working harmoniously together then we have a much healthier reproductive system and a much happier patient in the end.
